Fly Fishing MOROCCO
WHERE TO GO FLY FISHING IN Morocco
Lac Isli
Located high in the Central Atlas, Lac Isli is believed to be the remnant of an ancient meteor impact, featuring steep shorelines that drop quickly past 30 feet. The deep lake holds an exceptionally rare, endemic green trout that spends most of the year hunting in the abyss before entering the shallows to spawn during the winter. Strict seasonal catch-and-release rules protect the fishery, where fish feed heavily on chironomid midges, mayfly nymphs, and caddis pupae.
Lac Ifni
Resting in the high-elevation shadow of Mount Toubkal, the highest peak in the Atlas Range, Lac Ifni is one of North Africa's most scenic and remote waters. Reaching the lake requires a strenuous mountain trek. Fishing is strictly restricted to protect its isolated, endemic trout population, which has steadily rebounded from the brink of extinction through local conservation.
Draa and Dades River Watershed
Flowing through the Central Atlas, the secluded headwater tributaries of the Draa and Dades drainages hold populations of rare, fine-spotted native trout. These fish take refuge beneath large boulders and undercut rock shelves to avoid netting pressure. In undisturbed pockets, they are eager to rise to well-presented flies.
Tensift River Watershed
The highest, most secluded headwater streams of the Tensift system in the Central and Southern Atlas hold isolated populations of native Tensift trout (Salmo pellegrini). These rugged canyon streams provide natural protection and cold spring water necessary for the species to survive.
Ifrane National Park Waters
Situated in the protected cedar forests between Azrou and Fes, the streams and rivers of Ifrane National Park provide accessible fly fishing opportunities. While native brown trout populations are actively recovering under stricter management, the park's streams and lakes receive regular spring and summer stockings of rainbow trout.
Fly Patterns and Tactical Approaches
Morocco's mountain streams support healthy populations of stoneflies, caddis, and mayflies, while lakes are rich with midges, mayflies, and dragonfly larvae.
-
Small Streams and Plunge Pools: Dry-dropper rigs are the most effective method for prospecting fast pocket water and small pools.
-
Deep Canyon Runs and Rock Shelves: Euronymphing tactics allow anglers to get subsurface flies under heavy current seams where holding fish tuck against the bottom.
-
Evening Hatches: Late spring and summer evenings offer prime dry-fly action across both rivers and lake shallows.

From the northern reaches near Tangier to the High Atlas Mountains south of Marrakesh, cold mountain springs create isolated desert oases that sustain Africa's only native trout. While historical netting and overharvest impacted wild numbers, modern catch-and-release regulations and conservation efforts by local guides like Karim Boutellaka of Morocco Unexplored are paving the way for sustainable fly fishing tourism. Morocco is home to five trout species, including stocked rainbow trout (and historically stocked brook trout) alongside several rare, endemic members of the Salmo genus highlighted in Journey For The World's Trout.
